GusGus is an electronic music band from Reykjavík, Iceland. Initially created in 1995 as a multi-discipline art collective with 11 members. Throughout time individuals broke off to pursue other projects and GusGus evolved into a music group. In these 26 years that the band has been active there has been some rotation of members but two of its founders have remained, Biggi Veira and Daniel Ágúst. For the longest time this also included Stephan Stephensen (President Bongo) but he departed from the band in the year 2014
Birgir Þórarinsson (Biggi Veira) is a musical guru, for sure one of Iceland’s most talented producers. He is the main architect behind GusGus’ sound.
Daniel Ágúst Haraldsson was already a well-known musician before GusGus. He waltzed into the arena in 1988 by being Iceland’s representative in the Eurovision song contest. For years, he was in the band Nýdönsk and juggled the two bands, eventually dropping Nýdönsk to focus on his solo career and GusGus.
The group’s discography consists of eleven studio albums, Arabian Horse (2011) being the most critically acclaimed release, so far. Their latest album Mobil Home (2021) was released a few weeks ago. It was a few years in the making and does not disappoint!
From the get-go, GusGus had success abroad as well as at home. But, with the triumph of Arabian horse in 2011, GusGus expanded their fanbase in numbers and in geography, by a lot. They have fans all over and they tour a lot, but they are probably nowhere as big as in east Europe and Russia.
