The Venice biennale (La Biennale di Venezia) is an International Art Exhibition that was founded in 1895 and it is now one of the most famous and prestigious cultural organisations in the world. This year is the 59th edition and the overall theme is “The Milk of Dreams”.

A few months ago, we wrote about the Nordic Pavilion and how it has been dedicated to Sámi art this year. But today’s theme is the Danish Pavilion, created by Uffe Isolotto and curated by Jacob Lillemose.

The Pavilion itself becomes a part of the art piece, titled We Walked the Earth. It is set as a home of a centaur family. Visitors encounter the inhabitants as they walk through the rooms containing their belongings, food and working tools. It is not obvious what has happened to them and the world they live in. The whole setting is haunted by a deep uncertainty. It is impossible to tell whether it is tragic or hopeful, or perhaps both.

The inspiration is the historical past of Danish farm life blended with unfamiliar phenomena from the sci-fi future of a trans-human world.

Well-known from the Copenhagen art scene, Uffe Isolotto was appointed by the Danish Arts Foundation after an open call. Isolotto is a Danish artist born in 1976. His work often tackles themes like the self, the body, sexuality, and technology. His work spans video, 3D animation, sculpture, and performance.
